English

In our English lessons we follow the CLPE approach (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education).  This approach is book based and builds its planning around quality children's literature (please see the English page for more info).

Reading in Year 1

In year 1, the children participate in small group guided reading sessions using Little Wandle (the school's phonics programme).

Home Reading

The children will bring home their Little Wandle reading book home each Friday. The children will have already read this book with their teacher two times. It is important that you read this book at home with your child at least 4 times so that they begin to develop their fluency. They will also have a book from the library that does not match their phonics knowledge which you can read to them for pleasure.

Maths

In year 1, our lessons are planned using White Rose and Power Maths. Our lessons focus on mathematical reasoning and fluency. In our lessons, we use lots of concrete and pictorial resources to embed the children's understanding of concepts and then we go onto applying these to abstract questions (please see the Maths page for more information).

Children should come into school in their PE kits on these days. They should wear a white top or house colour top. Trainers, black/ navy joggers and jumpers will be required for PE as it is mostly outdoors. However, shorts are appropriate in the summer months.

Forest School - Thursday

All the children need to have their wellies and a waterproof coat in school each week. They will use these during OPAL play too.

Equipment

Please ensure your child has a named water bottle and waterproof coat in school every day. All other equipment is provided for children (e.g. pencils).

Snacks

Healthy snacks are encouraged, e.g. fruit and cereal bars. No sweets, chocolate or crisps please. Please help us to be careful of nut allergies and not send any nut products to school. Children also require a spill proof bottle of water. No fruit juice – only still water please.

How can you support your children at home?

Reading – You should read with your child at least 5 times a week at home. This can include Reading Eggs.

Topic homework - There is a topic homework sheet attached. We would like the children to choose at least one piece to do and bring it in to share with the class.

Maths- encouraging and supporting your child on Mathseeds will support their understanding of maths.

Recent events

October 2024

We visited Bekonscot Model Village to find out what life was like in the 1930s. We discovered that life was very different in the 1930s. They had small local shops, grew their own foods and travelled by steam train. We found out that there was a big difference between the lives of rich people and poor people in the 1930s. Richer people had access to new technology and new types of foods.

Our favourite parts of our visit were riding on the train and turning into a miniature figure (we loved big people looking at us).
